Djokovic has a losing record against Federer at 5-9 but he's been more prone to beating the Swiss Maestro in recent efforts.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are the semifinalists in the second singles match from Toronto today as the Rogers Cup winds down after a week of tennis.

Federer looked sharp last night against Tomas Berdych as he, Fed, won by the minimum 2 points in a deciding third set.

This is the first time in Djokovic's career that he will play Federer as the higher ranked player as the top Serbian has always been looking up at the Swiss Maestro in previous matches.  However simply because Djokovic outranks Fed does not mean that Federer is an underdog:

Djokovic to win: +140 (7/5) Bwin
Federer to win: -137 (about 5/7) BoyleSports

There is an overlay with those betting odds meaning that there is guaranteed value somewhere.

Federer has won 9 of the 14 matches he has played against Djokovic but the Serbian has won 3 of their last 5 meetings and 4 of Djokovic's 5 victories over Federer have come on the hard court surface where they have been fairly evenly matched in the last few years.

Federer's victory over Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals was significant because it was the Swiss Maestro's first win over a top 10 player since beating Andy Murray in the Australian Open final.  Truthfully, for parts of this year, Federer was having trouble in tournaments actually getting to the point in the draw where he would face a top 10 player.  By beating Berdych, Federer has hinted that he is playing better than he has been since the Aussie.

Djokovic, however, is often below the radar in tournaments where Nadal and Federer are playing.  Regardless of who is ranked what Nadal and Federer are the more popular players on tour, they are bigger ticket sellers, and as a result of that - they receive more attention.

But tennis punters that don't make their moves based on who is more popular should be advised that Djokovic has been playing better lately than he had been for most of the year and that is not simply an opinion based on his run to the Wimbledon semifinals.

In Davis Cup play in July, Djokovic defeated both Ivan Ljubicic and Marin Cilic, on hard court, both in best of 5 set matches and with both results straight set victories.  Only one tiebreaker was played in either match as Djokovic won a combined 37 games while only losing a combined 19 games.

Djokovic has not had a difficult draw in Toronto as he's gone through Julien Benneteau, Victor Hanescu, and Jeremy Chardy, but the world number 2 is 6-0 in sets played in the tournament with no tiebreakers.  That means that he has rattled off 12 consecutive sets on hard court with only 1 of those sets being really close.

No one is really noticing as everyone is more enthralled with Federer and Nadal but there's no reason to believe that Federer will have an easy time with Djokovic and this match should be very close.

In close matches you generally want to back whoever has longer odds and Djokovic at +140 (7/5) with Bwin is recommendable as he appears to have hit his best form and that should be good enough to beat Federer at this point in the Swiss Maestro's career.
