Federer's best tennis is behind him but can he still muster up a Slam effort in 2011?
Roger Federer is ranked third on tour and he has not made it back to a Grand Slam final since winning the 2010 Australian Open. Many are questioning whether Federer will still win Slams and betting odds make it look like a good question as there is not a sharp "yes" or "no" side.
Paddy Power have a proposition open on Federer for 2011 in which their site members can back or lay Federer depending on whether or not they think he will win a Slam in 2011:
- Yes he will: -137 (about 5/7)
- No he won't: EVEN odds
Robin Soderling, Tomas Berdych, and Novak Djokovic each scored a Grand Slam win over Federer in 2010 and those are the three players that Nadal beat in the Grand Slam finals in earning his three recent Slams. A big question with Federer is if he can beat Nadal in a Grand Slam match at this point. Even if you answer yes you still have to wonder if Federer can actually survive the field to get to Nadal.
My recommendation is to take the NO side in this proposition. While Federer is still playing great tennis, the sun appears to have set on his Grand Slam winning form and that will be clear when Melbourne concludes.
