Federer fails to accomplish one of his goals as he loses his Basel title to Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer on Sunday in the ATP Basel final.  It was an upset but the magnitude of the upset should not be overstated as Djokovic is at his career high rank and playing excellent tennis lately.

The score in the match was 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 and it was the first time a player besides Roger Federer took the title down since 2005 when Fernando Gonzalez won the tournament.

The match was evenly contested up until the third set when Djokovic broke Federer to open, held his own serve, and then broke again for the double break lead.

Federer appeared to be struggling mentally at some points in the match, a rarity for the world number 1.  Notably his body language in the sixth game of the third set seemed very negative as he squandered triple break point and his chance to get back into contention.

With the win Djokovic looks more and more like a future number 1 and his prices in the futures market for the Australian Open (+800; 8/1; bet365), the US Open (+1200; 12/1; Stan James), and the ATP World Tour Finals (+700; 7/1; Paddy Power) later this month look fantastic at this point.

Djokovic isn't like Andy Murray, who some are tipping as a future number 1, for one simple reason: Djokovic has already proven that he can take down a Slam.
