One of our staff looked at the rankings this morning and tried to figure out exactly what Federer's loss will lead to.

Roger Federer is out of Wimbledon in the quarterfinals at the All England Club as Tomas Berdych has lived up to expectations.  With the loss Federer only earned 360 ranking points from Wimbledon 2010 and since he won 2000 ranking points in 2009 that adds up to a net loss of 1640 ranking points.

When the rankings are updated after Wimbledon Federer should have 6885 ranking points.

Murray cannot catch Federer in the rankings even if the Scot wins the Wimbledon title.  Soderling cannot catch Federer either even if the Swede wins the Wimbledon title.  At time of writing both of those players were involved in very tight quarterfinal matches.

Novak Djokovic however only made the quarterfinals in 2009 and that earned him 360 ranking points.  He has already guaranteed himself 720 ranking points by booking his spot in the semis for a guaranteed net gain of 360 ranking points.  He does have more potential still for growth as he has opened as a slight favorite to win his semi against Tomas Berdych.

Djokovic had 6545 ranking points before Wimbledon 2010 and with a net gain of 360 ranking points he will have a new total of 6905 ranking points at least.

Djokovic: 6905
Federer: 6885

Federer will be ranked lower than 2nd for the first time since August 4th, 2003.
