However, the American was pushed into three sets as Lu fought back with a temporarily successful attacking approach.
Roddick eventually pulled through with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory, and he’ll be pleased to have survived such a difficult contest. He seemed fairly content with how he’d played, and he remarked after the match, “He plays so high risk. You know, overall I thought it was pretty good, save four games maybe.”
Roddick will now take on Grigor Dimitrov in the second round. Dimitrov also needed three sets to defeat a qualifier (d. Marsel Ilhan, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4). The Bulgarian up-and-comer could be in with a chance, but Roddick is expected to have the upper hand.
