Robin Soderling takes on Thiemo De Bakker in the opening Louis Armstrong court match today at the US Open.

Soderling got himself in all kinds of difficulties in the first round, throwing away a two set lead against the little-known Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer before eventually winning 6-4 in the fifth. It was a more routine day at the office for the Swede in round two as he dispatched Taylor Dent 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

De Bakker has been knocking on the door against the top players all summer, giving Andy Roddick and John Isner close matches and then making the semi-finals in New Haven last week. The former world junior number one has added a lot to his game in the past year and it won't be too long before he scores a big win in a slam. 

He should provide Soderling with a serious challenge. With a potential quarter-final against Roger Federer just two rounds away, is the Swede in the shape to repeat his French Open heroics.

They played in the Barcelona semi-finals earlier this year and Soderling crushed the Dutchman 6-1, 6-4 but he is not quite so strong on the outdoor hard courts as he is on clay and although Soderling should win, it could be four sets.
