He may be sixth seed but it’s hard to know what to expect from the Swede and it will take a big effort from him to make the second week.
Soderling really struggled at Flushing Meadows early on in his career but a big fitness drive has helped the Swede deal with the humidity, a problem for so many players in New York, and he’s made two successive quarter-finals, losing to Roger Federer each time.
Given their very limited funding situation, Tennis Ireland has done extraordinarily well to get two players through qualifying into the main draw. German based Sorensen qualified and won a round at the Australian Open at the start of the year and should have a future in the top 100.
Taking out a former Grand Slam finalist is probably too much to ask but Sorensen will be relishing his chance to compete on a show court and may nick a set.
