Richard Gasquet is in third round action against Nicolas Almagro in Montreal today.
Gasquet made the Rogers Cup final way back in 2006 and he's playing well enough to threaten again over the next couple of weeks. Currently ranked 13 in the world, Gasquet is well placed for a new assault on the top ten in the near future.
He achieved a major milestone with his opening round win over Florian Mayer on Monday, his 250th Tour level victory, following that up with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Thomaz Bellucci yesterday.
"I went through a period when I was losing matches, but I still practised a lot," he said. "Little by little I started playing better and winning matches. The victories added up and I became more and more confident."
He will feel in with a chance against Almagro who enjoys most of his success on clay. The Spaniard dominates the smaller clay-court events on the tour and has been so consistent, it's taken him into the top ten but when it comes to hard courts, he's nowhere near as dangerous. He defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky in round two yesterday but Gasquet will be favourite for this one.
