Richard Gasquet meets Kei Nishikori in round one of the ATP London Open
The main draw of the ATP London Open will begin today, with the match between Richard Gasquet and Kei Nishikori appearing to be one of the highlights. Gasquet has been in superb form recently, and should attract plenty of attention here in London if he maintains recent form.
Gasquet managed to win the challenger tournament in Bourdeaux, as well as the ATP Nice Open in consecutive weeks prior to the French Open. He may have also achieved some success at Roland Garros had he been given more time to recover, as well as a safer passage to the latter stages. He was extremely unfortunate to draw Andy Murray in the first round, and his fatigue was on show when he threw away a two set advantage against the Scotsman.
With this behind him, Gasquet should have recovered from his exhaustion, and has the potential to continue his ascent back up the world rankings if he performs well here in London. He begins his campaign against Kei Nishikori, the world number two hundred and fourty-six. Nishikori also faced tough opposition at the French Open in the shape of Novak Djokovic, who eliminated him in round two.
Gasquet and Nishikori have only met once previously back in 2008 on the hard courts of Tokyo. Gasquet won this match 6-1, 6-2, which adds to the reasons why he should be considered the favourite to win this match. This match will provide a decent test of Gasquet’s ability, and we may get an insight into how likely he is to perform well at Wimbledon this year.
