Richard Gasquet plays compatriot Gael Monfils for a place in the US Open quarter-finals.

This should be a highly entertaining match between two of the tour's biggest underachievers. Both have just a single slam semi-final between them but given their talent the French fans expect so much more.

Gasquet has never really performed on hard courts before and has a poor US Open record. However this year he's been in blistering form, taking apart sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round and neutralising the big serving Kevin Anderson 6-4, 7-6, 7-5 to reach the last 16 without dropping a set.

Monfils was taken to five sets and only just survived against Robby Kendrick in the first round but has since disposed of two very dangerous floaters in Igor Andreev and Andy Roddick's conqueror Janko Tipsarevic.

This is a great chance for both players to grab some valuable ranking points. It's a battle of Monfils' speed and athleticism against Gasquet's flair. Gasquet's willingness to take the ball on and get forward will probably give him the edge on the pacy New York cement.
