Nadal is at his weakest on the pacy US Open hard courts and as such he is yet to reach the final. It always takes a player at the top of his game to take out Nadal in a major and the past two years he has been thwarted in the semis, first by Andy Murray in 2008 and then Juan Martin Del Potro playing out of his mind last year.

It will be interesting to see if we get a more aggressively minded Nadal over the next fortnight. He's had a lot of success at Wimbledon, playing close to the baseline and dictating play but come Flushing Meadows, Nadal has tended to retreat back in the past.

Gabashvili's chances of making a name for himself tonight are slim. The world number 98 made the most of a weak New Haven field to reach the quarters last week but had previously lost his past three matches on the US hard.

He played Nadal twice in 2009, getting annihilated at Miami and then the French Open.
