Rafael Nadal looks to book a third round berth when he takes on American Ryan Sweeting on day three of Wimbledon.
Nadal had a few early scares in his 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 first round win over a spirited Michael Russell. The world number one had stayed up into the small hours to watch his friend Rory McIlroy take the US Open golf title and looked a tad sluggish in the opening couple of games but he responded quickly to cruise through in just under two hours.
Nadal relished the opportunity to open Centre Court proceedings on day one of the tournament and he was all smiles afterwards though as ever he refused to look beyond today's encounter with Sweeting.
"I played against him two times this year, one time in Australia, one time in Indian Wells. He had a fantastic comeback today, so probably he arrives to the match with good confidence," Nadal said after beating Russell. "I think he's a good player, no ? I saw him winning matches around the tournaments. He's playing better and better every time."
Sweeting came from two sets to love down to defeat Spain's Pablo Andujar 3-6, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, 6-1 on Monday and he's enjoyed a fine year, winning the Houston title in April. However his grass-court form has not been great and he lost first round at Queens and Eastbourne.
Nadal has beaten him comfortably in Australia and Indian Wells this year and this one should be no different.
