Ljubicic’s past record against Nadal does not augur well for his chances of making the final. He has lost five time in a row to Nadal including two defeats last year – once on the clay and again indoors in Shanghai.  

Nadal is also on red hot form right now having reached this stage without dropping a set. Tomas Berdych looked dangerous coming into their quarter-final but Nadal was at his harrying best from the back of the court and sealed a 6-4, 7-6 win.

Ljubicic has to be given enormous credit for this run this week. The Croatian is a former world number three but he has not troubled the big events for several years now and was ranked outside the top 20 coming into Indian Wells. However with his booming serve and heavy groundstrokes he has bulldozed his way past the likes of Novak Djokovic to reach a first Masters Series final since 2006.
