Rafael Nadal will be out for up to four weeks with his latest knee injury.

Nadal’s woes continue, not only was he being soundly outplayed by Andy Murray in their Australian Open quarter-final earlier this week, but his body continues to break down under the strain of playing tennis at the very highest level.

Nadal will be relieved to find out that it is not a recurrence of the tendonitis which kept him out for so long in 2009 but instead it is a small tear in the back of the knee, a result of wear and tear.

The world number two appears to be particularly vulnerable on hard courts, making it somewhat unfortunate that the majority of the year’s tournaments are on that surface.

Nadal’s will almost certainly not play again until Indian Wells in March and could be overtaken in the rankings by Andy Murray and maybe also Novak Djokovic.

It is not something which particularly concerns the Spaniard.

"For me it is more important to play well again and to have the good feelings on the court that I had in Abu Dhabi, Doha and also at the Australian Open where I played at the highest level," he said.
