Nadal's chances of winning the US Open are much longer than what his odds suggest.

Rafael Nadal is the top seed at the 2010 US Open for the men's draw as the seedings have been awarded based on ranking.  However Nadal is not a great hard courter and he should not be considered the favorite or even second favorite to win the Flushing Meadows tournament.

Nadal has not done well against the top 10 on the hard court surface since his summer of 2009 return to tennis from injury as he has compiled the following wins and losses in the last 12-13 months:

  • ATP Montreal 2009: quarterfinal loss to Juan Martin Del Potro
  • ATP Cincinnati 2009: semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic
  • US Open 2009: semifinal loss to Juan Martin Del Potro
  • ATP Shanghai 2009: final loss to Nikolay Davydenko
  • ATP Paris 2009: semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic
  • ATP World Tour Finals: round robin losses to Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko, and Novak Djokovic
  • ATP Doha 2010: final loss to Nikolay Davydenko
  • Australian Open 2010: quarterfinal loss to Andy Murray
  • ATP Miami 2010: semifinal loss to Andy Roddick
  • ATP Toronto 2010: semifinal loss to Andy Murray
  • Wins: quarterfinals of ATP Paris 2009 against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, quarterfinals of ATP Miami 2010 against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Nadal has only beaten Tsonga on the hard court surface in the last year and a bit for top 10 players and overall Rafa is just a dismal 2 for 12 against the best.

Backing him at +333 (10/3) is the worst bet at the US Open this year and those considering making the bet would be better off taking Federer at +275 (11/4) with Coral or Andy Murray at +375 (15/4) with Bwin.
