Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic both opened their campaigns at the 2011 Rome Masters on Wednesday and each player turned in a victory.
Djokovic had no trouble with Lukasz Kubot in the second round as the Serbinator crushed his Polish opponent 6-0, 6-3. Djokovic now faces Swiss number 2 Stanislas Wawrinka, as the former top ten player has put together two winning efforts in Rome.
Nadal had a tougher time against an Italian qualifier as Paolo Lorenzi demonstrated some skills against the world number one. Lorenzi won the first set in a tight tiebreaker but Nadal then stormed back and took down a 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Nadal now awaits the winner of Philipp Kohlschreiber and Feliciano Lopez, two players who, at time of writing, were playing in a deciding third set.
