Polona Hercog will face the challenge of Vera Dushevina on Wednesday in round two of the Mercury Insurance Open

Sixteenth seed Polona Hercog is capable of making a good run in this week’s Mercury Insurance Open, though she was given a major test in the first round against South African qualifier Natalie Grandin. She eventually escaped with a 7-6(1), 2-6, 6-4 victory, and will be hoping for a more comfortable win in her next match.

Hercog’s next opponent will be Vera Dushevina of Russia. Dushevina headed into this competition with a fairly poor 9-14 match record for 2011, but she managed to get her campaign off to a winning start against a struggling Aravane Rezai (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

This will be the first time that Hercog and Dushevina will meet in WTA competition, and this makes pre-match predictions a little more complicated. On current form Hercog should be able to prevail though, and Dushevina will need to be on top of her game to stay in this tournament.
