Eighth seed Polona Hercog found a safe passage through to the second round of the Collector Swedish Open on Tuesday, defeating Anna Tatishvili of Georgia in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. The young Slovenian may well be on course to enter the top fifty, and we may even see her make a big challenge for what would be her first WTA career title.

Hercog’s next challenge will be a second round clash against defending champion Aravane Rezai. Rezai has made an unexpectedly poor start to the season, and she needs to turn things around in this competition or her ranking may plummet even further. Whilst she eventually won her first round matchup against Akgul Amanmuradova, Rezai made eight double faults and her service game was erratic throughout.

Rezai will enter this match with a 2-0 head to head record against Hercog, though the Slovenian appears to be the favourite due to Rezai’s current run of results. This contest should be worth keeping an eye on, and it will be fascinating to see if Rezai can finally rediscover the kind of form that served her so well over the past few years.
