The Slovenian dropped serve just once en route to a 6-4, 7-5 win, but secured her third break of the match late in the second set before serving out the match.
Speaking after the final, Hercog remarked, “I’m really happy to win my first title here in Bastad”. She continued, claiming, “It’s a big victory for Slovenia…Now I’m the top player in Slovenia and an upcoming player. It was on TV, so I hope a lot of young players watched it.” The last Slovenian player to win a WTA title was Katerina Srebotnik, back in 2005.
Hercog had been in trouble at numerous times in this tournament, but on each occasion was able to pull through. She narrowly beat defending champion Aravane Rezai in a third set tie-breaker in round two, and she beat seventh seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in a lengthy semi-final. Having done this, her success in the final seems all the more impressive.
