Her serve was broken four times against Peng, but a strong return game ensured that the Russian prevailed.
Petrova will be glad to have progressed, though she wasn’t entirely happy about her performance. "It was a little up and down from my side,” she admitted. “I would take the lead then lose the lead.”
"I had difficulty with my serve. I had something going on with my upper back, but adrenaline kicked in and I didn't think about it too much. Thankfully I won the first set, which is very important against her. In the second set I got the lead then lost it again, but closed it out."
Petrova will now take on former champion Ana Ivanovic in the semi-finals. Ivanovic was in top form on Thursday, brushing aside the challenge of Roberta Vinci in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).
