The rest of the big names begin their Paris campaigns on Wednesday, and most of the men’s singles matches feature the most recognized players on the tour. Play begins on Central Court with Andy Roddick up against Jarrko Nieminen. The Finn has found some form of late, but he may have his work cut out against the American No. 1, who’s in contention for a place in the ATP World Tour Finals.

This match is followed by Juan Monaco v Novak Djokovic. Djokovic will be aiming to build some momentum up ahead of the season finale in London, but needs to be wary of the ability of his Argentine opponent. Monaco defied the odds last week in Spain to oust Andy Murray from the Valencia Open 500, and he’ll be aiming for another upset here.

Murray is third up against another Argentine, David Nalbandian. Nalbandian has a 2-1 head-to-head record against Murray, so it’s possible that Murray will struggle. To add to this, Nalbandian was the champion in Paris in 2007, and he knows how to deal with the fast courts.

In the fourth match on Central Court, John Isner is up against France’s Michael Llodra. Isner will be looking to utilize his powerful serve and forehand, but might find that Llodra, who was born in Paris, gives as good as he gets. Llodra is currently ranked No. 34, and will be attempting to level his head-to-head record against the American (Record stands at 1-0 to Isner).

The evening matches will be of particular interest to the majority of fans. Richard Gasquet faces Roger Federer in the first Central Court evening match, and he’ll be doing his utmost to give the home fans reason to cheer. Even so, Federer has been close to unstoppable recently, and his triumph in the Basel Indoor Championships last week indicated that he’s playing at a level near to his remarkable best.

In the final match on Central Court, Gilles Simon will meet Robin Soderling. Soderling is the No. 4 seed in this competition, and could be one of this week’s main contenders for the title. Simon beat Andrey Golubev in round one, and seems to be in good-form at the moment.

The action on Court 1 will begin with Sergiy Stakhovsky v Marin Cilic, followed by Ivan Ljubicic v Stanislas Wawrinka. The final Court One games will be Jurgen Melzer v Santiago Giraldo, Thomaz Belluci v Nikolay Davydenko, and Fabio Fognini v David Ferrer.

David Ferrer is worth keeping an eye on this Wednesday, as he’s currently in the hunt for Tour Finals qualification. He currently occupies the seventh qualification spot, though this could all change this week. Jurgen Melzer can also still qualify, but he needs to win this tournament outright.
