The thermometer reached 106F on Centre Court at Wimbledon yesterday and 126 spectators had to be treated by the St John Ambulance crews on standby.

A total of 519 people, including a 74-year-old, were seen by the medics on site in the first four days of the Wimbledon Championships.

The hot weather led to the new Centre Court roof being partly closed to provide shade for the Royal Box.

The soaring temperatures did not appear to affect Andy Murray as he beat his Latvian opponent, Ernests Gulbis in straight sets 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.

The British number one was cheered on by a packed 15,000 Centre Court crowd who were unusually vocal in their support for Murray.
