Novak Djokovic looks to capitalize on Roger Federer’s early exit when he plays Ivan Ljubicic in the Indian Wells fourth round.

Federer’s surprise defeat has left the Indian Wells draw wide open and Djokovic as a past champion in 2008, will be one of the favourites to seize the chance and claim the first Masters Series event of the year.

First though there is the matter of getting past big serving Croatian Ivan Ljubicic who reached the quarter-finals in Indian Wells last year.

Djokovic will be confident having won his last five matches against Ljubicic. He beat him 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 at last year’s US Open and also won 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 on the way to the Dubai title last month.

However Djokovic’s form has been woeful so far in this tournament. He is very lucky to be still in after facing several match points in the last round.

He has generally won his matches against Ljubicic by consistently wearing the Croat down, making him play that extra ball to win points. The question will be whether Djokovic can keep the errors down enough to do that effectively.

However Ljubicic would have a much better chance in a night match. Playing in the heat of the day favours Djokovic who will be looking to keep the points long and outlast the Croatian.
