Novak Djokovic was overjoyed after helping his country win the Davis Cup.
Djokovic has been looking ahead to this final throughout the indoor season and he played a starring role, defeating both Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon in straight sets with a sparkling display. Djokovic's serve has wavered throughout the year, both in terms of consistency and potency but it was at its best during both his singles matches this weekend.
"It's historic. This is our biggest success as individuals, as a team, as a country. We are not even aware of what we have done,” Djokovic said afterwards. "This is the best moment of my career and probably of my nation. This is like winning the World Cup for us."
However admit the delight of the home fans, French captain Guy Forget was ranting furiously about the antics of some of the partisan Serbian supporters.
"Now that it's over, the only thing I can say is always when you have a big event like this, you always have 20 or 30 idiots that are whistling every time you toss the ball,” Forget said.
"That's very frustrating. It's very unfair. These people don't need to be on a sport field anywhere. I think that kind of spoiled the pleasure that you can have on the court because you're always fighting the chair umpire to apply the rules."
