Nikolay Davydenko plays Jurgen Melzer in a playoff match at the Kooyong Classic on Saturday.
The downpours playing havoc across southern Australia this week have caused much disruption to the scheduling at the Kooyong Classic. Melzer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga finally got on court for their first match yesterday afternoon and they were reduced to playing a one set shoot-out to see who made the semi-finals.
Melzer won 8-6 and was soon back on court again against Gael Monfils. For a while it looked like the Austrian was on course to make the final, which would have been an impressive achievement in just his second match of the year. However he could not maintain his first set level and Monfils eventually edged it 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Davydenko never really looked in it against Lleyton Hewitt and the pumped up Aussie delighted his home fans with a 6-3, 7-6 win.
Davydenko has a convincingly one-sided 6-1 record against Melzer however and on medium paced hard courts it would be a surprise if he did not come through.
