bet365Rafael Nadal has been humbled by Florian Mayer today at the Shanghai Masters. The world No. 2, who has admitted to struggling with changing playing conditions in the Asian swing, lost a crucial tie-breaker in the first set, before falling to a 7-6(5), 6-3 defeat.
Nadal felt that the better player won on the day. "He played really well," noted the Spaniard. "I didn't. I felt that I was not playing bad from the baseline. But my return, when he was serving the first serve, was terrible tonight.”
“I only won four points in whole match [on his] first serve. So I cannot expect win a match when the opponent is playing well, is serving well, is doing very good serve and volleys, returning, and only winning four points with returning the first serve. [I] congratulate him.”
Mayer, who has been fairly impressive throughout the season, heralded the victory as the biggest in his career. “I cannot actually believe it right now.” revealed the German. “But the tournament goes on tomorrow so I have to stay focused for the rest of the week.”
