Na Li defeated Venus Williams on Wednesday and in doing so she advanced to the Australian Open semifinals.
In what has to be considered to be an impressive upset, Li came back from down a set to win 2-6, 7-6, 7-5.
The match was not one for fans of great serving as there were far more than a dozen service breaks in the match. Li also squandered an opportunity to serve out the match at 5-4 and she also missed two match points before converting her third. The victory will help Li get closer to a top ten ranking on tour and her hopes of winning her first career Slam are alive, although she may need Victoria Azarenka to upset Serena Williams to have a more serious chance.
For V. Williams the loss ends her hopes for a first time ever Australian Open title and really paves the way for a Serena Williams vs Justine Henin final for the women's draw. V. Williams did improve on her result from last year however as she fell in the second round of the 2009 Australian Open.
