Andy Murray will see a specialist today to determine the damage to his injured wrist.

Murray played through the pain in three rubbers of Britain’s Davis Cup tie with Poland at the weekend in an ultimately fruitless attempt to keep his country in Euro-African Zone 1. Although he won his two singles rubbers, Poland won 3-2.

There is concern that Murray has done further damage in playing. When he injured his right wrist in Hamburg two years ago, he compounded the problem by attempting to play on for several more points. However Murray does not think it’s anything like as serious this time.

"The other one was a bit of a freak thing," he said. "It came out of nowhere and that was agony. I couldn't even hold a racquet never mind play a match. "This one feels more like tendinitis, where it's sore and it can get better and worse."

Murray’s main aim for the autumn is the Masters Cup at the end of the season which will be held in London for the first time in front of a sell-out crowd. However with a lot to defend over the next few months his chances of overtaking Nadal again to become world number two are slim.

"Whether I’m out for 14 days or longer, you just have to be careful with wrists and not keep playing when there's something wrong because the problem doesn't go away. There's a big tournament in London at the end of the year and I want to make sure I'm fit for that."
His focus is already turning to the next grand slam in Melbourne where he has much to prove and he’s never been past the fourth round down under.

“ I need to decide what to do next because it's such a short turnaround at the end of the year and the preparations for Australia have to be very good because of the conditions so I need to decide when I can fit in a long break.”
