Murray has been the catalyst for a huge increase in British people taking up the game.
Andy Murray’s rise up the world rankings and success in the major events has
seen tennis’ popularity soar in the UK. There’s been a dramatic increase in people taking up the game and figures are suggesting that more than 200,000 will have done so by the end of the year.
Despite the success of Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski, their achievements didn’t have as much impact in encouraging participants in the UK.
Murray isn’t the only factor in tennis’ growth in Britain. The introduction of the new roof at Wimbledon and two unbelievable men’s finals there in successive years have definitely helped as well as the move of the Masters Cup to London this year.
The result is that £400 million has been pumped into the economy, showing that tennis can still flourish even in a recession.
