The big serving Canadian had seemed to be in the driving seat after winning the tie-breaker at the end of the first set, but the Frenchman refused to back down, and managed to stay in the hunt for his first ATP title of the season.
"I had some opportunities in the first set and I didn't make them,” commented Monfils. “Maybe I got a bit nervous at the end of the tie-break, but I kept going, which was good. I felt he was a bit tired and my game plan worked."
Monfils is now scheduled to meet Jarkko Nieminen in Sunday’s final. "I expect a tough match from the baseline," revealed the world No. 15. "I know he's a great fighter... I need to review my game plan again to be better than three weeks ago."
