Mikhail Youzhny faces Stanislas Wawrinka in round four of the US Open later today.

You would have been hard pressed to predict this quarter-final clash before the tournament began but both players have certainly earned their places in the last eight. Wawrinka has been knocking on the door at the slams for the past few years and he's achieved his break at Flushing Meadows with two enthralling wins, first taking out Andy Murray 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 and then Sam Querrey in a five set slugfest.

Youzhny has more experience on the big stage having beaten Rafael Nadal to reach the US Open semi-finals four years ago. He saw off American hope John Isner in the third round and proved too strong for Tommy Robredo on Monday, seeing off the Spaniard 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

There will be two of the finest single-handed backhands in the game on display here with Wawrinka's flowing shot a particular delight to behold. The Swiss has shown plenty of big match nous so far at the US Open, successfully adapting his tactics mid-match against Murray and Querrey to swing the contests his way.

However how much does he have left in the tank ?  Youzhny will definitely be looking to get the Swiss in long rallies and run him from side to side. Going by their previous matches this could be another lengthy one as it's 2-2 on the head-to-head and when they met in Miami earlier this year it was desperately close, Youzhny edging it 1-6, 7-6, 7-5. In that case, the Russian's freshness could make all the difference.
