Philipp Kohlschreiber will be hoping for a good run at the Mercedes Cup in front of home fans.

Kohlschreiber is seeded seventh and starts against compatriot Florian Mayer. He looks to have a decent chance of reaching the semis this week as the seed in his section is Gael Monfils who was very poor earlier this year on the clay. He will be hoping to do better than his efforts at the Mercedes Cup last year, where he went down limply in round two.

Kohlschreiber enjoyed a typically solid clay-court season. It took Fernando Verdasco’s best efforts to defeat him in five sets at the French Open and he had good runs in Munich and Monte Carlo (where he stunned Andy Murray in the first round).

Mayer who is ranked 23 places lower at 55, only played three clay events in the spring due to injury but did make the final of the Rome challenger.

These two are 1-1 from matches earlier in their careers. They played in Miami in April but Mayer had to retire at 6-6 in the first set.

This is far from an easy opener for Kohlschreiber. The tall Mayer is very solid from the back of the court but Kohlschreiber moves a lot better and that could swing it for him. Our prediction is for Kohlschreiber to progress in three.
