Top seed Nikolay Davydenko has been made to wait till Thursday for his first match at the Mercedes Cup.

It will be a relief for Davydenko whose first round bye has given him ample time to get used to the German clay after coming straight from Russia’s Davis Cup clash against Argentina at the weekend which was held on fast indoor hard.
The Russian returned to the tour last month after being sidelined for three months with a fractured wrist. He never really liked grass even at his peak so he has had a rough time over the past few weeks and will be happy to be back on clay.
He starts against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, a Spaniard who knocked out defending champion Jeremy Chardy 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 in round one.
They played in Umag last year with Davydenko cruising to a 6-2, 6-2 win. It will not be so easy for the Russian this time but expect him to get through in three.
