Melanie Oudin was handed a safe passage into the quarter-finals on Thursday, and should be well rested ahead of her quarter-final clash against Alberta Brianti. The American should now be considered as having an outside chance of clinching this week’s title, though she still might have to face the likes of Dinara Safina and Greta Arn if she can beat Brianti.

Brianti has gotten this far by beating Laura Pous-Tio in round one and Ksenia Pervak in the second round. She’s the underdog here, but may be eager to make the most of this opportunity to challenge for the first title of her career. At the age of 31, this would be a memorable achievement for the Italian.

As these two players are ranked 93rd and 94th in the WTA rankings, this isn’t one of the easiest contests to predict the outcome of. To add to this, Oudin and Brianti have never previously met in WTA competition. The winner of this match will face either Dinara Safina or Anastasia Pivovarova in the semi-finals.
