Former world No. 1 Maria Sharapova will continue her charge for the Wimbledon 2011 title with a third round contest against Klara ZakopalovaYou can watch and bet on the action from Wimbledon at bet365World No. 6 Maria Sharapova is being touted by many as the tournament favourite here at Wimbledon 2011, and she’ll be amongst the main contenders for as long as she remains in the draw. She overcame a minor scare in round two on Friday, pulling back a first set deficit en route to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over popular British youngster Laura Robson.
Sharapova has shown a few glimpses of the form that won her the Wimbledon title back in 2004, though there are a few question marks hanging over her consistency. That said, the Russian’s shoulder injury seems to be behind her, and 2011 could yet be a very significant year for the 24 year-old. She will continue her Wimbledon campaign on Saturday with a third round matchup against world No. 35 Klara Zakopalova.
Zakopalova has a 1-0 head to head record against Sharapova, following a sole victory over her in 2003 at the Australian Open. Things will probably be different this time around, though Zakopalova has made a good start to the competition. If she can play like she did in her 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 win against No. 31 seed Lucie Safarova in round two, she should be in with a chance.
