2008 champion Maria Sharapova was stunned by compatriot Maria Kirilenko.
Sharapova went into this tournament as one of the favourites and her form in some early season exhibitions suggested she could do considerable damage.
However her close friend Kirilenko had other ideas, pulling off an incredible 7-6,
3-6, 6-4 win.
Kirilenko took the game to Sharapova from early on with some fierce ball-striking and recovered several times from a break down in the opening set to win it 7-4 in the tiebreak.
Sharapova recovered and dominated the second set, really going after Kirilenko’s second serve with much success.
However Kirilenko found a second wind and exposed the rusty Sharapova’s erratic baseline game in the decider racing to a 5-2 lead. She was broken when serving for the match but made amends in the next game, breaking for a remarkable win.
Kirilenko said afterwards that it was only in the second set that she started to believe she could win the match.
“In the first set I was hitting the ball a little bit late,” she said. “She was playing so aggressive, and I was very defensive. And then I started to feel much better in the second set actually. I started to feel that I can be aggressive, as well. I did more winners than in first set. And from that point, I started to feel that, yeah, I'm playing good from the baseline and I can beat her.”
