Sharapova was on the ascension in her match and lost.

The women's draw lost both Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova on Sunday.

Justine Henin eliminated Sharapova as the two competitors for the women's singles draw recently concluded their 3rd round match.  Sharapova was up a break at 2-0 in the third set and she held TRIPLE break point before Henin stormed back to win 6-3 in what is a devastating loss for Sharapova.

The win sends Henin through to the fourth round where Sam Stosur will be her opponent and Henin should be able to advance past that test as well where Serena Williams may be waiting in a quarterfinal match.

Maria Sharapova does well in the tour events but when it comes to Grand Slams, she has been a non-fact in the past year of events.  Take a look at the following losses that Sharapova has suffered in Slams:

Wimbledon 2009: second round loss to Gisela Dulko
US Open 2009: third round loss to Melanie Oudin
Australian Open 2010: first round loss to Maria Kirilenko
French Open 2010: third round loss to Justine Henin

The loss to Henin is not so discrediting at Roland Garros but the other 3 losses are questionable for someone considered to be a Slam threat.  Sharapova will now prepare for Wimbledon where she is considered the 5th favorite with Bodog at +1200 (12/1).

Those odds look pretty skimpy for a consisent 1st, 2nd, or 3rd rounder in Slams for the past year.

On the other half of the draw Venus Williams has never won the French Open and she is not going to win in 2010 as Nadia Petrova eliminated her today in straight sets.  Williams, who will turn 30 this summer, has a history of underachieving in the event as the clay courts do not suit her power game.

With the win Petrova maintained her excellent form that saw her win a tight struggle against Aravane Rezai in the third round.  The line score in the match was 6-4, 6-3 and Petrova now advances to face Elena Dementieva in an all-Russian quarterfinal.

Dementieva has far more experience winning quarterfinal matches in Grand Slams however Petrova has made 2 semifinals in Roland Garros.
