Maria Sharapova will enter this year’s TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships with ambitions of winning the competition. The world No. 2 has enjoyed a superb 2011 season, and it would be no major surprise to see her lift the title at the end of the week.

That said, she had to pull out of the Toray Pan Pacific Open due to an ankle injury in September, and she hasn’t played competitively since. She’s been training in Istanbul though, and reports indicate that she’s fully fit.

Her aggressive style should be enough to trouble anyone in the competition, but she’ll need to ensure that she plays with consistency, or she’ll quickly run into some tricky situations.

The competition in Istanbul will be fierce, and the Russian can expect Caroline Wozniacki, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka to be major threats. Even Agnieszka Radwanska, the last player to qualify for this tournament, has demonstrated the full extent of her abilities in recent weeks. This will be a tough event for Sharapova, but she’s got the capacity to win it. Many people will regard her as the player to beat.
