Marcos Baghdatis proved too strong for Lleyton Hewitt in the Medibank International quarter-finals.

Hewitt is a four-time champion in Sydney and had looked in ominous form to his rivals in the early rounds. The quarter-final match-up was much anticipated after the pair’s five set classic at the Australian Open two years ago.

Hewitt looked on course to secure a big win when he broke early in the first set and went on to take it 6-4 before going up an early break in the second. However Baghdatis is a tough competitor and reeled off six straight games to level the match.

A single break in the third proved enough for Baghdatis to seal a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.

There was further bad news for local fans as the last remaining Australian Peter Luczak crashed out 7-6, 6-2 to big serving Mardy Fish.
