Lleyton Hewitt meets Peter Luczak in round one of the ATP Halle Open
Lleyton Hewitt didn’t play too badly at last fortnight’s French Open, but was eliminated by an unbelievably good performance from Rafael Nadal. Nadal had always been expected to win the match, though Hewitt played admirably well to force Nadal to work hard for his victory. Hewitt enters this week’s ATP Halle Open as one of the favourites, and will be looking for some pre-Wimbledon success at a grass-court tournament such as the Halle Open.
Hewitt managed to win the Wimbledon title in 2002, though the Aussie never seemed to fully fulfill his promise in subsequent years, despite having had a successful career to date. He gets his 2010 grass court season underway with a match against Peter Luczak, a Polish born player, who also represents Australia.
Luczak is currently the world number seventy-one, so shouldn’t be written off. These two players have never faced each other on the ATP Tour, which adds further uncertainty to the tie. Hewitt certainly has the class to succeed, though a Luczak victory wouldn’t necessarily turn too many heads.
Despite this, Hewitt is a fantastic grass-court player on his day, and will pull through here if he can assert himself early on. The former world number one will be hoping to once again finish the year within the world’s top twenty-five, and the grass-court season may hold the key to him achieving this. We should be in for a fiercely competitive match, by first round standards, and this match looks like it may be the most exciting one of the day.
