Lleyton Hewiit fell out of the top hundred this week following his quarter-final exit at Halle, where he had been the defending champion. The former world No. 1 will take solace in the fact that he made a decent run though, especially given that he had just recovered from a foot surgery that put him out of action for three months. Whilst the odds are still against him, Hewitt is the kind of player that might just prove to be a dark horse here in Eastbourne.

Hewitt will begin his AEGON International campaign with a first round showdown against Olivier Rochus. Rochus is not amongst the favourites here, but he’s a tricky opponent, and should be able to give Hewitt a real test. The Belgian’s lack of height might be viewed as a big disadvantage on grass, though it’s worth noting that he’s won some big matches on this surface before, including a notable success against Marat Safin at Wimbledon in 2002.

Hewitt takes a 3-0 head to head record against Rochus into this match, and should be feeling confident given that he’s beaten him twice on grass, both times in straight sets. The pairing last met in 2007, where Hewitt threw away a two set advantage en route to a 6-2, 6-3, 6-7(4), 3-6, 6-1 victory.
