Lleyton Hewitt will continue his bid to retain the Gerry Weber Open title with a second round matchup against Andreas Seppi

Lleyton Hewitt returned from injury in style on Wednesday, cruising past Leonardo Mayer in straight sets to earn a berth in the second round of the Gerry Weber Open. Whilst there had been doubts about how Hewitt would play on Wednesday, the manner of his 6-2, 6-3 victory suggests that he might just stand a chance of defending his title here in Halle.

Hewitt will now face Andreas Seppi in the second round. Seppi did well to emerge from a grueling three setter against Tommy Haas in round one, but has had an extra day to rest up and should be raring to go on Thursday. Seppi entered this competition as the world No. 51, and he’ll be well aware that a win here could help him to establish himself as a top fifty player.

Hewittt has a 2-2 head to head record against Seppi prior to this contest. The first three meetings between the pairing went to three sets, but Hewitt should have the momentum having won the most recent match between the pairing 6-0, 6-2 (ATP Rotterdam, hard court).
