Lleyton Hewitt displayed the grit and determination typical of his game to deny three match points and beat Robin Soderling 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters.

Hewitt refused to accept defeat during the second set tie-break, and went on to fight back to book a second round clash with Benjamin Becker.

"It was a hard match," Hewitt admitted. "It was not easy to go through because he has been playing well these past months, in Roland Garros and also Wimbledon."

"Against Becker, I will have to try to play my game and execute well if I want to go further."

"I played here for the first time in 1999, I have always played well. I like this tournament. It is one of my favourite on tour."
