Only the top eight in the year long WTA Race qualify for next week's end of season WTA Championships in Istanbul and after winning back to back WTA Premier titles in Tokyo and Beijing a few weeks ago, Agnieszka Radwanska looked to have secured her place.
All she had to do was win her opening match at the Kremlin Cup and a place at the prestigious event was hers. However as fate would have it, she drew hard hitting Lucie Safarova in her opening match and the Czech sent her packing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
This had opened the door for fast-finishing Marion Bartoli. The Frenchwoman kept her hopes alive by winning the Osaka title last week and if she can go all the way in Moscow, she will overtake Radwanska. She started well, thrashing Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals and Radwanska has been left biting her fingernails for the rest of the week.
Her best hope lies with top seed Vera Zvonareva who is seeded to face Bartoli in the semi-finals.
