And it's not just the quality of the scalps which have impressed many observers this week, it's the mental strength Tomic has shown in earning those wins. Many more experienced players would have folded after failing to serve the match out at 5-3 in the third against Gael Monfils in Thursday's semi-finals but Tomic held firm, and after missing two match points, eventually won a third set tiebreak to see off the Frenchman 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(2).
"To be honest, I forgot about those match points. If I had been thinking about that, I wouldn't have done well in that tiebreak," Tomic said afterwards. "I normally play well in tiebreaks. I think in juniors I was 85 per cent winning tiebreaks. I probably play smarter, that's what you need to do. If I had've thought about those match points, God knows what would've happened."
"I felt really good. I started to execute my shots better in the third set and I'm picking up a lot of confidence. I was moving better than my first match. I've got what I need here and that's confidence, to pick that up before Monday. I know the (Australian Open) draw is getting done tomorrow and I'm going to have Saturday to use it like any final and try to win."
Fish has snuck through the other half of the draw underneath the radar but the world number eight has been building up confidence and he knows he'll need to be at his best to take down Tomic.
