Fernando Verdasco and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have both been unbeaten all week at Kooyong.
Both players are in excellent form for the Australian Open next week. Verdasco could be a major dark horse once again after his stunning run last year. He destroyed Novak Djokovic 6-1, 6-2 and although Djokovic was out of sorts he has not taken quite such a beating for a long time. With another straight sets win over Fernando Gonzalez, Verdasco is looking in mean shape.
The same is true of Tsonga who has beaten Robin Soderling and Tommy Haas, both in straight sets. Whether the Frenchman can recapture the exuberant brand of tennis which thrilled the crowds all the way to the 2008 final will be fascinating to see over the next couple of weeks.
The two players have played just once before, a real battle in last year’s Australian Open quarters with Verdasco running out a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner.
