Kim Clijsters faces Vera Zvonareva in the Wimbledon quarterfinals


Kim Clijsters battled back from a set down in yesterday’s battle of the Belgians against Justine Henin, and is now set to face Vera Zvonareva in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Clijsters is now one of the major contenders for the Wimbledon crown, and is only three victories away from lifting the title.

Clijsters should be feeling confident about her chances against Zvonareva, due to the fact that she has a 5-0 head to head record against her. However, it should be noted that one of these victories was the result of a retirement, and three of the other four lasted for three sets.

Zvonareva made it through to the quarterfinals as Jelena Jankovic was forced to retire with a back injury yesterday. Zvonareva had been leading their match 6-1, 3-0, and looked likely to progress regardless of the retirement. She played exceptionally well, though she’ll need to be on top form to challenge a fully fit Kim Clijsters.

This could be a telling match for Clijsters, though she seems to have already proven that she has the credentials to challenge for the title. This will no doubt be a hard fought battle, as a place in the Wimbledon semi finals is at stake.
