Kim Clijsters takes on Petra Kvitova in the third round of the US Open this afternoon.

Clijsters upped her game in round two, seeing off Sally Peers 6-2, 6-1 and at the moment it looks like she and Caroline Wozniacki are the players to beat. Scarily for her rivals, Clijsters still has much room to improve, she made 21 unforced errors against Peers, despite dropping just three games.

The Belgian has looked incredibly relaxed so far but from now the competition starts to get serious and it will be interesting to see how she copes with the pressure of being the pre-tournament favourite. She has struggled with that tag in the past and folded in the Wimbledon quarters against Vera Zvonareva in June when a path to the final seemed wide open. 

Kvitova's shotmaking proved enough to see off a dogged Elena Baltacha in the second round. It was a tough workout for the Czech 27th seed who's been out of sorts since her Wimbledon exploits. She was fortunate to win the first set on a tiebreak but found her hitting rhythm in the second, sending Baltacha scurrying to all corners with that big leftie forehand.

However Clijsters is much faster than Baltacha and should be able to expose Kvitova's suspect movement. When they met in Miami Clijsters won easily 6-1, 6-1.
