Kim Clijsters plays former world number one Dinara Safina in the second round of Cincinnati.

Clijsters made her comeback to the tour in Cincinnati last year, reaching the quarters where she lost 6-2, 7-5 to Safina. Twelve months later things have changed. While Clijsters went on to win the US Open and this year’s Sony Ericsson Open, establishing herself back in the top ten, Safina suffered a dramatic loss of form and multiple injuries and has fallen to 35 in the rankings.

Clijsters is the fourth seed here while the unseeded Safina did not get the luxury of a first round bye and edged past Roberta Vinci 7-5, 6-4 in round one.

Clijsters has kept to her plan of competing fairly sparsely and this is her first tournament since Wimbledon though this should not affect her too much, she does not seem to have too many problems with shaking off the rust. Safina competed in Stanford and San Diego over the past couple of weeks but suffered early losses in both events.

Before retiring, Clijsters enjoyed plenty of success against Safina and as a result lead their head-to-head 6-2. They have not played since Cincinnati 2009.
