Kim Clijsters believes that world number one Caroline Wozniacki will win a Grand Slam at some point in her career.
Wozniacki came under some criticism during the autumn after finishing the year as world number one despite being yet to win a Grand Slam. It is a familiar tale for women's tennis in recent years with Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic coming under fire for the same reason after assuming the top spot in the rankings.
However while Safina and Jankovic have still yet to break their slam duck, US Open champion Clijsters is convinced that Wozniacki has what it takes to win one of the game's four majors.
"She will win a Grand Slam. She is too good of a player not to,” Clijsters effused. “She's young; she's No.1. I really hope she doesn't worry about what anyone says about being No.1. She has good parents with good heads on their shoulders and she just has to keep working the way she has been. Good things will keep coming.”
"Achieving the No.1 spot is a great effort on its own, not even connected to the Grand Slams. I think I beat Davenport in LA when I became No.1 for the first time. It's an amazing feeling - I had a celebration on court with flowers and cake, but then an hour afterwards it was back to the tournament. You don't think about it - at least I didn't. You try to win each match, and the opponents get tougher because they all want to beat the No.1. It may get tougher in that sense."
